Andrew Whalen

I’ve lived in Lima, Peru, for the past two years, where I worked as a correspondent for the Associated Press. Living in that manic third world metropolis and reporting on the vagaries of Peruvian politics and culture was a life-changing experience, but one I ultimately felt compelled to leave behind for several reasons. These include, but are not limited to: a hacking cough I couldn’t shake on Lima’s smog-infested streets, the freedom and independence of freelance journalism, and a desire to educate myself about conservation, climate change, millennial cultures, and eco-tourism in South America.

I bring to Verdant a background in journalism, international relations, migration, and facial hair. I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2007, but don’t miss the Philly Cheesesteaks. I wish there were more fish tacos in South America. No joke.
